(More customer reviews)I just received this item today (ordered via Amazon partner J&R Music & Computer World) and assembled it in our new family room / home theater room. The assembly instructions were well-written and pretty easy to follow. Total assembly time was about an hour or so, mainly because I really took my time and was being very careful not to over-tighten any screws.
The final product looks very nice. It's a clean, modern style, and the glass shelves have a piano black high-gloss undercoat. The shelves really are like mirrors, as I can see the reflections of items behind the cable management slots quite clearly. The unit also looks very sturdy, and I'm confident that it will hold my new 50" plasma TV and all the A/V gear without any problems.
The shelves are spaced far enough apart that my 7.5" high center channel can fit on the middle shelf with room to spare, and my receiver gets lots of airflow room sitting on the bottom shelf. They're also wide enough that they should easily hold my five main components plus center channel comfortably / with no need to stack components. I should even have enough room (and weight capacity) left to put a Wii or XBox 360 in there without a hassle.
It's not listed in the description (that I saw anyway), but the feet on this unit are adjustable to about half an inch. This was great for me, as my family room floor is slightly off-level in places, and this let me adjust everything so that the new Panasonic TH-50PZ800U plasma TV I purchased at the same time will sit nice and level, with no worries about it tipping forward or back some day.
You have to be careful when unpacking the carton, as all of the screws, glass pads, end caps, etc. are together in a smallish package that can be easily overlooked when unpacking. In addition, all 3 glass shelves come in their own box inside the main one, and you're going to be dealing with a LOT of styrofoam as you unpack them and the other pieces of this unit.
But all of that padding is a blessing, as the box left in front of my garage had a large tear at one end, the other end was pulled open, and the front was only held together by two pieces of strapping tape. I don't know if the UPS guy just outdid himself living up to the company's rep of badly manhandling their cargo, or if I got some kind of return / refurb / floor unit from J&R, but it was unsettling to see the package in such rough shape. If it wasn't for all the styrofoam and protective paper sheeting inside, I think the glass shelves would have been in pieces.
One last note -- This unit is HEAVY! The shipping weight is 95 pounds, and I believed it as I worked to get the box into my home. Most of that weight is the glass shelves. You'll either need to be careful if you bring it into your home yourself, or else make sure you have a friend handy to help you carry it in.
Overall, a very nice purchase that I just have to ding the one star due to the condition on arrival. I can't wait for the TV to be delivered Monday so I can see it sitting on top of this good-looking stand!
UPDATE: The shelves aren't quite as roomy as I'd first thought. With my center channel speaker on the middle shelf, I could only just squeeze my HD cable box, which is 15" wide, without significantly moving the speaker off-center relative to the TV. All of my other components (receiver, DVD player, and Monster HTS 3600 MK II Power Center) are on the bottom shelf, with the DVD player and power center stacked on top of each other. If the power center and DVD player weren't low-profile, or the shelf was shorter, I couldn't have stacked them and I'd have been in a bit of trouble since my plasma TV fills the top shelf.
There should be enough room to still get a Wii and/or XBox 360 / PS3 in there, since those devices are relatively short and narrow, but full-size components are definitely limited to 4 with a center channel thrown in.
