(More customer reviews)First off, this is a quality, solid metal phone. It sounds as good as one can expect an analog phone to sound, and it's sturdy enough to take a serious beating. The finish on the brushed steel model is nice, and seems to resist fingerprints pretty reasonably. As an added bonus, the ringer in this phone is an honest-to-goodness old-school bell ringer. Seriously. No cheesy electronic imitation ring here. Really, the only downside to this phone is that the handset cord does not seem to be detatchable, which means that undoing tangles is a lot more difficult than it should be, and that if that cable ever gets damaged, well... so much for the phone. Maybe that was done to keep this reproduction true to the original Crosley 302, but that seems like a minor enough detail (and a big enough inconvenience) that it could bear modernizing.
Speaking of which... there's another review that complains about the lack of caller ID, and that it's uncomfortable to hold on one's shoulder. Well see, the thing is, this is a reproduction of phone model that's nearly 70 years old. That's how the handset was shaped then, so that's how it's shaped now. If they changed the shape in order to make it more comfortable, it wouldn't be a reproduction any more, it would be a whole new phone. That would really defeat the purpose (and eliminate the novelty) here. And as for Caller ID, well, it's enough that they replaced the rotary dial with touch-tone buttons in a circle... I think caller ID might have been pushing it with this design.
Long story short, this is a great phone if you're going for a seriously contemporary/retro look and won't need to use the phone that often... but certainly don't choose this as your primary phone. It's more form than function.

(More customer reviews)This phone was purchased for my wife to go in our vintage inspired red kitchen. It is perfect. As noted in other reviews, the handset is fairly heavy. If I were rating this phone for every possible negative I would also note that there is this annoying tether that connects the handset to the wall. However, this is not a big negative because we already have a set of cordless phones for use around the house. They are used for long conversations as we can take them into the room with the sofa and lay around conversing for hours while our servants fan us and feed us grapes.
This phone is first, a decorative item. As such, it does an amazing job. Every time my wife looks at it on the wall she kisses me and says, "I love my red phone!" Second, this is a telephone. It gets an amazingly clear signal. There is no static whatsoever. I'm told this relates to the annoying tether I mentioned earlier. Another nice thing about the tether is that because of it, I always know where this phone is. Unlike the cordless phones which may or may not be returned to their cradles after use, this phone is always returned to the same place.
In summary, if you are expecting something cordless and portable, this phone is not for you. If you are looking for a corded wall phone with a vintage look and a colorful twist, you will not be disappointed.

Cons: The receiver isn't designed so it can rest on your shoulder -- you have to hold it. The body doesn't have an indentation in the back (below the cradle) so you can easily pick it up. And the ringer is really loud (authentic, but startling). Overall, we like the phone but a few minor design changes would make it perfect.

(More customer reviews)Unlike the reviewer whose phone was made of "light plastic," ours certainly is not. In fact, it weighs a hefty 55 ounces, 3 and a half pounds. It rivals the phone of my childhood in being as heavy and as solidly constructed as the original was. It also has a volume control under the base which the original did not. In short, it's not only a trip down memory lane, but a solid instrument as well--rare in these days of cheap phones. It goes beautifully with my rolltop desk and lifts my spirits as well. Modern convenience with a traditional flavor leads us to say, we love it! We think you will, too!

The Candlestick phone, also known as the ¿Upright' initially became popular during the early 1900s before the introduction of the one-piece handset. The first Candlestick phones were introduced when the magneto system was in use, which meant that the phone was connected to a large wooden box called a "subset" containing a battery, bell, and crank. But oh have we come a long way. From its bell-shaped mouthpiece to its cloth covered receiver cord, this telephone replica recalls a vintage instrument from the 1900's. But a closer look reveals some modern technology including a decorative dial that functions as a push button for tone/pulse operation as well as a center medallion that serves as a redial button. This modern day version of the Candlestick Phone would have surely made Alexander Graham Bell proud.
