Sennheiser HD438 Closed Circumaural Hi-Fi Headphone with Enhanced Bass Review

Sennheiser HD438 Closed Circumaural Hi-Fi Headphone with Enhanced Bass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned these headphones for about a month and feel I'm ready to review them.
If I could pick two words to describe these headphones, the words would be Natural & Immersive.
I own a couple other Sennheiser products: the EH350 and the HD560. Comparing the three, the HD438 is my favorite. They're easier to drive than the HD560 and they sound better & are more comfortable than the EH350.
Sources:
ipod 5.5g 30GB - Apple Lossless files
ipod 7g 160GB - Apple Lossless files
Denon PMA-250 Integrated Amp & Powermac - Apple Lossless files
Sound Quality:
Detail is very important to me, and the HD438 does disappoint. I hear all the little nuances in music that other lesser headphones (like the EH350) tend to smooth over. The HD438 has a pretty wide soundstage for a sealed headphone as well. Instruments are well separated as well. They have good bass, better than both the EH350 and HD560. I'd say the bass is neutral, not too boosted. Highs are clean and crisp, but not harsh in any way. These are the headphones you want for long, non-fatiguing listening sessions. Before breaking the headphones in, the mids seemed a bit recessed, but as they've broken in that problem no longer exists. Just beautiful, immersive, detailed music.
I listen to a lot of electronic music, and I find them very immersive and clear. They sound great listening to jazz too, cymbals sound very crisp and clear, and the other instruments sound natural. I also listen to some rock and ska, and I've been happy with their performance there as well. Bass is crisp and tight and the other instruments sound as they should. Since they sound so natural, they're quite intimate as well with other styles, like folk and classical.
There is one downside to these headphones I've found (if you can call it that). They're very revealing. If you have a bad recording or a bad source player, it's going to let you know. I tried em with some lower bitrate mp3s and AAC files, (128-192kbps) you'll hear graininess and artifacts that some other headphones smooth over.
With my ipod 5.5g, the bass is a bit lacking and the overall volume level is a bit lower than I'd like. In my opinion, you have to turn it up past 75% to get a reasonable level of volume.
With my ipod 7g, the bass is a bit fuller and there's a bit more detail and separation and there's a bit more headroom in the volume. I'd say 70% is where you'd want to be for a reasonable level.
My Denon PMA-250 has a ton of headroom. I only have to turn it up about 20% or 25% to get to a reasonable level. Given that, it has fuller and stronger deep bass when driven by this powerful amp.
Overall, I think they sound as good as my audiophile-grade HD560's, but they have a slightly darker sonic profile. I'd say these are headphones that will benefit from an amp, but it's not necessary in most circumstances. Design & Isolation:
These are very, very comfortable headphones. I've had multi-hour listening sessions and have had no comfort issues whatsoever. The velour pads have a soft texture, but are firm enough so they cup your ears rather than sinking into your head.
They're sturdy headphones, with a single cable running out the left side. Included is a shorter & a longer cable that is easy to swap out depending on your needs. It also comes with a 1/4" adapter. At first I thought the outside design would bother me, but they're not as flashy as I thought they would be, which makes me happy.
In terms of sound isolation, they isolate a fair amount, but not enough to completely isolate you from the outside environment. They have a small amount of sound leakage, but really not very much at all.
Overall:
I think this is a great pair of headphones. They come with a 2 year warranty, and I've had very good luck with Sennheiser's quality in the past. If you're looking for a great sealed headphone that's comfortable, sounds beautiful & natural, from a quality brand, these would be a great choice!

Crosley CR712 Autorama Turntable with CD Player and AM/FM Radio, Red Review

Crosley CR712 Autorama Turntable with CD Player and AM/FM Radio, Red

First, let me say that I was very pleased with the look of this unit. It "looks" like REAL quality when you remove it from the box. That's about where the pleasure ends though. The radio stations don't program well (oodles of static). The sound quality was really bad and I initially planned to buy external speakers until it stopped working. Yep, I bought this unit as a Christmas gift and in 3 days, the recipient told me she walked over to the unit to hit stop on the playing CD and everything went black. She tells me that the carpet probably caused a charge that killed the unit but she wasn't sure. I sent the Crosley back to Amazon with my CD still held hostage. I was very pleased with Amazon though, they gave me a FULL refund, shipping and return charges included. I would buy OTHER brands from Amazon again.

Crosley Radio founder Powel Crosley was the first U.S. manufacturer to build a production model sports car several decades back, and now the company pays tribute to its founder's grand ambitions with the CR712 Autorama turntable. Housed in a streamlined red chassis that looks like the front grill of a classic '50s roadster, the turntable is designed for vintage car fans, retro freaks, and anyone else who wants an alternative to the soulless, high-tech look. The Autorama is no slouch from a playback perspective, either, with a belt-drive motor that plays 33-1/3, 45, and 78 rpm records, giving you access to both full-length LPs and classic singles collections. Plus, the device comes with a front-loading CD player with 20-track programming and an analog AM/FM radio that picks up your favorite music and news stations. And thanks to the external FM antenna, you'll receive consistently good reception everywhere in the house.
Best of all, the Autorama is a completely self-contained unit, with a pair of built-in, full-range stereo speakers. The speakers make this a good bedroom, office, or basement "playroom" system, as you don't need anything more than an electrical outlet to enjoy your LPs or CDs. As an alternative, you can also connect the turntable to a stereo receiver through the auxiliary output. Additional features include several built-in equalizer presets for customizing the audio profile by genre or taste, an extra-precise digital volume control, and a full-function remote control. The CR712 Autorama measures 13.5 by 6.75 by 14 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty.
What's in the Box Autorama, 45 spindle adapter, diamond-stylus needle, remote control, user's manual.

DiMarzio Instrument Cable, Metallic Chrome 10 Foot Review

DiMarzio Instrument Cable, Metallic Chrome 10 Foot
Average Reviews:

I had an annoying humming sound coming out of my guitar amp and used to think it was normal as all high gain settings amplify noise to some degree. When I noticed the noise levels changed when I touched my old cable or moved the guitar around I decided to give this cable a try and gone was my humming sound !!! The noise was not completely eliminated but with very moderate noise gate settings I didn't hear any. This cable is quite thick which indicates good shielding plus its not as expensive as some high end Monster or Mogami cables but most likely performs just as well.

DiMarzio Instrument Cables are top rated by Guitar Player Magazine - They easily passed Guitar Player's "Zildjian cymbal guillotine test" and "jump rope test" of 9/97, demonstrating how well built and reliable they are in real world conditions. In order to carry the DiMarzio name, they have to sound great too. Guitar Player describes them as "quiet and transparent with a clear balance from lows to highs." They sonically outperform cables costing many times their price. They are noise-free when they are moved and are 100% shielded with a combination braided shield and carbon jacket. They are low capacitance, measured by Guitar Player at only 620 pf for the 18' model. They come with Switchcraft connectors to ensure reliability and they have a lifetime warranty.

Not much else to say, they have excellent sound and they're very comfortable. Word of caution, and this happens with all i-Frogz headphones, you might want to take some electric tape and put it around the top of the jack of the headphones. It seems that is the first thing to go on all of their headphones, this is my third pair. I've taped them slightly on both sides and the bottom to where it's barely noticeable, to be safe. Still working just fine.

Package came within 3-4 days with the super savings deal! It physically looked just as the picture with no disappointments, love the shiny color coat, love the fold-up option, love the cushions for the head and ears. my only complaint would be that the fit is not as great as i expected, when i put it on i would still be about to hear a lot of outside noise, i could crank up the volume but then other people would be able to hear my music blasting. Im used to using earbuds, not headphones so i have a harder time with storing it when its not in use, its pretty bulky. Another problem would be that when i put on the headphones and take it off, sometimes my hair gets caught at the pinch at the top. Overall i am satisfied with this product, i have gotten a lot of compliments whenever i wear it and since its winter time it covers my ears like an ear warmer!
